Welcome to Tennis Players Network

February 2008 Newsletter

STOP please and think something through –

Are we Georgia tennis players being responsible with our dollars spent toward our beloved sport?    (I know the answer to this rhetorical question)

Industry News:

  • Racquet sales are up 29.7% since 2003

  • Racquet sales are up 12.2% in 2007 over 2006 in the first 3 quarters

  • Year-end total ball shipments are up 8.1% in 2006 over 2005

  • CONSUMER PURCHASES OVER THE INTERNET have increased in ALL categories apart from ball sales.

Can’t we do our part for Georgia? The economy is trying to right itself but we are sabotaging it daily. Let’s shop locally and keep our tax dollars in Georgia rather than the other 49 states. I am; and our tennis clubs, stores and pros would greatly appreciate it! It is so simple! You see, if we support our sport on a local level – in absolutely every way we benefit. There is a whole lot going on this month. Are you watching any college tennis? Get your kids out to see what college tennis is all about. We have some surveys this month – Do you qualify for some improvement on the mental side of your game?

Hey – have a great month and tell us you want to read about!

UNIVERSITY TENNIS

Georgia Southern University

STATESBORO, Ga. – Tennis tends to be an individual sport, but at the collegiate level it takes the effort of each and every member to earn a match victory. Success in team sports is determined by the cohesion and dynamics of the group and this year’s Georgia Southern women’s tennis squad possesses the unity that all teams need to reach the summit.

TENNIS  TIP

“You can’t make a race horse out of a pig.”

“Yeah, but you can make a damn fast pig!”

-John Steinbeck East of Eden

A good line can sum up a career in coaching! You can get better, I can guarantee it. When taking a private lesson ensure the following things:

  • Your coach is qualified to make changes.

  • The changes are simple and specific.

  • Technique is important; don’t settle for “making it work” you are paying for the lesson.

  • Take ½ hour lessons if you feel that too much information can confuse you.

  • Divide your lessons into technical, tactical and mental.

Finally, work on what you have learned over and over until you can measure your success. Read a good book!

Video Analysis...

See What You’ve Been Missing

Video analysis is not just for top professionals anymore. It may not be for everyone (some are perfectly happy dinking in their second serve and running around their non-existent backhand), but most people are visual learners.

Given the opportunity to see themselves on video, they cannot help but improve.
